3rd Grade's Stellar Space Journey with NASA

This month, 3rd Grade embarked on an exhilarating journey into outer space, discovering different planets' unique characteristics.

Students focused on the realms of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Using books and online materials, students practiced effective note-taking and ensured proper attribution of sources. These notes served as the foundation for crafting articulate sentences that captured the essence of their findings. They seamlessly weaved their discoveries into comprehensive reports through collaboration and small-group instruction.

Enhancing their learning, these junior astronomers had a special visit from Amy Muckenthaler, a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) team member. This visit proved to be an exceptional opportunity for students to gain firsthand insights into the Mars missions and the robotic exploration of the solar system. Ms. Muckenthaler brought a replica of a Mars rover. Witnessing a rover in person added a tangible dimension to their understanding and enthusiasm for their project. In an exciting demonstration, students lay on the floor while the rover drove over them, simulating how it would navigate and explore the Martian terrain. This interactive experience transformed the classroom into a lively space exploration scene, profoundly engaging the students in the wonders of space technology and exploration.

As a culmination of their efforts, students have diligently woven their research and exploratory experiences into captivating 3D planet projects, which they will showcase at The Great Fair.
