Lower School's Green Team Seeds Eco-Awareness

The Lower School Green Team spearheaded several exciting activities during the fall semester.

Green Team, open to 3rd through 6th Grade students, is offered as an afterschool club through the Lower School's Enrichment Program. From planting and maintaining the Lower Campus Garden to completing various art projects and discussing environmental issues, this club is the perfect place for students to develop environmental awareness and have fun getting their hands dirty.

For their inaugural project, students harvested the sun's energy by building solar ovens out of pizza boxes and a few common classroom materials. These Trailblazers could not believe how well their solar ovens worked and were proud of their environmentally friendly cooking methods—making s'mores at their first meeting was a delicious bonus! This tasty success quickly set a high bar for future projects and inspired them to explore even more innovative ways to protect the planet.

Next, the Green Team focused their efforts on the Lower School Garden. Early October saw the planting of numerous varieties of lettuce, carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli, and soon, they could enjoy the fruits of their labor. Students also learned to make a lemon vinaigrette dressing and indulged in a delicious and nutritious salad from their harvest. Aidan J. '33 shared, "Green Team is a lot of fun, and the best part was growing our own carrots." The entire group remains extremely proud of their efforts in cultivating a successful fall garden.

Their dedication to the environment extended even further as these young eco-warriors organized a campus clean-up following a windy weekend, determined to maintain the pristine beauty of the Lower Campus. The (over) ten pounds of trash collected was a testament to this club's commitment to keeping the School clean.

The Green Team might be made up of small hands, but it makes a BIG impact! Thank you to these incredibly conscientious students for helping to create and maintain our beautiful campus.
