5th Grade Explores Empathy in the Pages of Wonder

Students in 5th Grade recently completed their literary journey through R.J. Palacio's heartwarming pages of Wonder.

Inspired by a true story, this award-winning children's novel centers around the remarkable Auggie Pullman, a 10-year-old with a severe facial deformity navigating the challenges of his first year in school. Auggie's odyssey is masterfully woven with a delicate balance of triumphs and tribulations, serving as an inspirational narrative that urges readers to embrace differences and discover the profound beauty of empathy.

Wonder artfully explores themes of kindness, acceptance, and the far-reaching impact of prejudice. The students delved into a world where the power of choosing kindness becomes a guiding principle, profoundly aligning with Sierra Canyon's Character Program. The book's powerful message has transcended the pages, shaping the theme of our students' school year.

Before the break, these Trailblazers had a unique opportunity to bring the curriculum to life through a virtual Q&A session with Jonathan Siebert, a 24-year-old who shares a similar condition with Auggie. This engaging interaction provided a real-world connection to the fictional character's experiences. Jonathan openly shared his journey, drawing parallels to Auggie's challenges and triumphs, effectively bridging the gap between fiction and reality. This virtual exchange became a powerful tool for fostering understanding, empathy, and a genuine appreciation for diversity among the students.

The impact of the novel extends beyond the confines of a typical classroom experience. It has become a catalyst for meaningful discussions and reflections on the importance of kindness, acceptance, and the unique qualities that make each person special. The virtual encounter with Jonathan added a layer of authenticity to the lessons learned from Auggie's story, leaving a lasting impression on the students and reinforcing the enduring message that choosing kindness can truly transform lives.
